How Your Stimulus Money Was Spent

September 21, 2010

Government’s Definition of ‘Shovel Ready Projects’

Apparently the only thing the government is shoveling . . . S**T

  • $18 billion for university research ($2 billion of which goes to University of California)
  • $762,372 to University of North Carolina for choreographers to explore interactive dance.
  • $15 million for federal stimulus signs and 17 jobs or about $900,000 per job.  Illinois has spent $650,000 stimulus signs and Pennsylvania has spent $157,000 for 70 signs
  • $18,000 to monitor media coverage of Obama’s handling of the BP Oil spill.
  • $554,763 to replace windows on a visitor’s center in Washington State that closed its doors three years ago
  • $62.5 million for a light rail tunnel under the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh to connect sports stadiums to casinos.
  • $73 million for two fire stations in San Antonio
  • $11.2 million to convert a train station into a museum
  • $1.9 million to study ants
  • $90,000 for new sidewalks to replace sidewalks that are only 5 years old and lead to a ditch.
  • $40 million for upgraded office space and indoor parking for Kansas law makers
  • $50 million for WNBA practice facilities in Connecticut.
  • $15.8 no-bid contract to clean up a Halliburton environmental mess
  • $762,372 to a Georgia Tech professor so he can study improvised music
  • $1 million for Los Angeles to purchase bus stop art
  • $1 million for 1,600 high school student in Utah
  • $6 million to build a high end hotel in Buffalo New York
  • $25,000 for the international accordion festival in San Antonio
  • $144,541 to get monkeys high on cocaine
  • $497,893 to quit smoking and get a smart phone.  So government is buying you a smart phone so you can call someone who can tell you “don’t smoke”
  • $199,862 to help Serbians lobby Russian policymakers
  • $298,543 to predict the weather on other planets
  • $456,663 to Cal Berkley to study global circulation in the atmosphere of Neptune
  • $712,883 to scientists who are trying to create a joke machine (don’t we already have one — Congress)
  • $500,000 to Dayton, Ohio to track citizens’ use of recycling bins
  • $823,200 to teach uncircumcised African men how to wash their genitalia
  • $12 million UCLA study how to better encourage Africans to undergo voluntary HIV testing
  • $111 Million to Los Angeles for 54.46 jobs
  • $82 million in additional research funds to University of Utah who already receives $240 million in research funds
  • $113 million to Cornell University to create/retain jobs.
  • $27 million in Stimulus Funds to Brown University (without the stimulus funds, government funding would only have increased 16%)
  • $60 million University of Delaware in additional research funds

The U.S. Government already spends $50 in subsidized research where under the Bayh-Dole act the Federal government owns unlimited rights to the intellectual property and patents, but the taxpayer who subsidized the research gets nothing, not even their original investment back.  The University and individual research — who risked nothing patents and licenses the product and charges taxpayers for a product they financed.
